Review of My Girlfriend's Boyfriend (2010) by Kami B — 23 Mar 2011
Eh, a little dishonest, a little clever. The movie begins with a cheesy romance scene and I'm thinking shit I can't take this, but also am thinking this is something the writer character has created. I am right and breathe a sigh of relief. Then, and I really like this, the story is created to set up that very exact cheesy romance scene. Quite clever and then I like the real ending better. But that's the first ending. The second ending is lame and as mediocre as the rest of the movie.
Basic story is this: writer gets rejected with lame story. Is writing in a cafe (lame) and waitress hits on him. At the same time, another guy comes in and she hits on him because, well, it's Alyssa Milano and some things never change? :) But yadda yadda, she's torn between the two and eventually is going to skip town with the rich guy instead of the writer. Oh, but wait. We've actually been watching the story the young writer has created with the advice from the publishing lady. The rich, hot guy, is a fictionalized, manly version of himself. I hate twists and hate this one even if it is about writing and romance.
Sooo, leading up to that, the writer guy (Chris Gorham) is pretty decent. The ad exec he creates (Landes) seems fake. Ha ha he actually is, but I think the actor was supposed to not seem fake. Milano is pretty average and I think I wish they'd casted someone else, maybe younger, and maybe better at acting. But once the twist is on the table, you get your standard Hollywood ending. I think it's a 5/10 movie probably (5.5 on imdb), but I'll throw it a six because of some of the writing stuff.
