Review of My Friend Dahmer (2017) by Dawdlingpoet — 26 Nov 2021
This is very much a slow moving, character focussed drama, with a sinister/unsettling feel, for obvious reasons. Its not especially gripping but its an interesting watch never the less. I should perhaps point out that the shortened form of the term 'spastic' is uttered quite a few times, so if you'd find that offensive then you'd probably be best to avoid this film.
This film is based on a book, which is based on a true story, so there is at least some truth to it. I felt the main, titular character, Jeff, was played quite well by Ross Lynch. His mostly quiet and reserved nature does make him come across as a perhaps somewhat strange person, which he must have been - he's exploited in ways to gain approval of the, I assume, somewhat 'cooler people' in high school.
I think people could relate to that but that's not to say, in any way, shape or form, that I condone what he did in later life. Of course not. Its an interesting watch, perhaps somewhat slightly making me think of the film 'We Need To Talk About Kevin'.
I would recommend this film, yes but only if your interested in dramas with a slow plot pace and your not offended by certain strong language, of course. Its a curious watch - is it too controversial because of how it portrays the main character? I don't know.
I think its a somewhat good film but I realise it may not be for everyone.
