Review of My Favorite Year (1982) by Jay J — 22 May 2009
I'm sure it's a faithful and realistic rendition of the behind-the-scenes atmosphere of a 1950's TV studio, especially due to the barely-disguised names of real people used throughout, and yet everything's just massively amplified to great comedic effect.
O'Toole can't help but be brilliant, and here he grounds his larger-than-life character on a sometimes uncomfortable foundation of humanity that adds a lot of much needed weight to the film. What the heck happened to Mark Linn-Baker after this? He's absolutely brilliant, and spends the rest of his career in bit parts on TV shows.
Sheesh.
