Warner Brothers' studio was literally overtaken by the $5 million production during set-making, prop design, costuming and then filming. Jack Warner didn't even consider Julie Andrews, star of the Broadway production, for the role of Eliza Doolittle, he wouldn't take no for an answer from Audrey Hepburn.
It is disappointing to discover that Warner's decision to use Marnie Nixon as a stand-in for Hepburn's singing shattered her chance for an Oscar, giving it instead to Julie Andrews for her role in Mary Poppins.
However Audrey is stunning, and is a perfect Eliza, and Harrison, other star of the hit Broadway production, is a wonderful Professor Higgins. Lavish costumes and sets, wonderful music and great performances make this an undisputed classic and cemented Audrey's star-status.
