Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by Ed Q — 26 Jun 2009
I've wanted to watch "My Dinner With Andre" for the last 25+ years, ever since Siskel and Ebert gave it rave reviews on "At the Movies" (anyone remember that?). The whole concept is intriguing.
I really like the idea that a 2 hour conversation on film can be as engaging and entertaining as a high budget major motion picture. Even more so, actually. It was made in 1981 but doesn't seem dated at all.
It is a unique film insomuch as the characters themselves are almost completely inconsequential. It's all about the ideas, opinions, viewpoints...everything else is secondary. Which makes it sound kind of sterile, I know, but the opposite is true.
"My Dinner With Andre" easily finds it's way to my list of greatest films ever made. I'm not sure it will appeal to most folks, though.
