Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by Corey P — 15 Sep 2009
It's an enjoyable film and being a fan of philosophical discussion definitely helps you enjoy the conversations. However, as ballsy as it might be to create a film of primarily 2hr table discussion, it doesn't necessarily deserve ultimate praise for not being utterly dull.
I admire the film, the content is definitely well thought out and on that level I would rate it very highly. However, there is still an aspect of filmmaking that I feel is lacking in this type of film.
It is more direct, focused and relatable in being presented through conversation rather than documentary or otherwise. I feel the film was complete in its own essence for what it needed to achieve. A truly great film would express these ideas, thoughts, meditations in a more representational form.
The difference between sitting in on a deep conversation that makes you think and living a series of experiences that make you feel.
