Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by Jack G — 24 Dec 2009
Yeah, so the whole movie is just talking, what of it? When you've got some of the best talk in any movie ever, it's not a bother. I actually responded to this 'all-talk' movie more than, say, Before Sunrise/Sunset even if that one had more visual tact.
Malle has not a whole lot "visually" going on, albeit one particular close-up on Andre when he talks about being buried alive is a keen choice, and the cutaways to the waiter (maybe the best 'actor' in the movie) are great.
No, this is something for those who just want to see two people talk about life and death, what it means to be alive in a society as sterile as the one we live in now (that is actually all too similar to the one Shawn and Gregory talk of being in 1982), and I was just transfixed, and sometimes amused greatly, by their conversation.
I can't say it means a lot in terms of a visual medium, but just on a personal level it means a lot to me - it's also the kind of movie I know my wife will be nothing but bugfuck crazy over, which is nice.
