Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by Ld P — 15 May 2009
When I saw it on film on the big screen in Dallas taxes in 1981 it blew me away. I just finished writing a short capsule review of Pretty Baby and remembered I had not written anything about this film--one of my favorite films.
Certainly in my top 50 films. Bold daring experimental --and fascinating film making. certainly one of the best films of 1981 and for me one of the best films of the 20th century. The thought about making a movie about two guys conversing and having dinner.
....and that's it--- that's the whole movie. It was only until last year I realized that the film was made in a studio and not even in a restaurant. That is how real this film is I was sure it was filmed live in a restaurant.
Both Shawn and Gregory were just incredible. I have just never imagined or seen another movie like this one. I guess the feeling is due to the rare stream of consciousness dialogue. highest marks five stars be sure.
This movie polarizes viewers-most folks don't have the patience to listen to more than 2 hours of chit chat intellectual bravado and BS. I still find it wonderfully inventive and have just seen it again this month.
I will submit revised long review soon.
