Review of My Dinner with Andre (1981) by Jason Y — 06 Jun 2010
Two men, a playwright and theatre director, have dinner and talk, and er... that's it. Both men are kind of, sort of, playing themselves. The Andre of the title is telling the story of his last few years which was heavily influenced by his passion for theatre and an implied nervous breakdown.
Wallace Shawn (an actor I can't take seriously because I always think of him as Vicini from Princess Bride and Rex from Toy Story) listens politely. Some of it is interesting. Some of it is pretentious.
None of it is suited to a movie. it suffers like Coffee and Cigarettes or Inconvenient Truth in that no matter how interesting the topic, the camera doesn't do anywhere near enough.
