Review of My Darling Clementine (1946) by Scott T — 01 Aug 2006
Out of all the retellings of the Wyatt Earp and the O.K. Corral story, My Darling Clementine stands on top as the first and greatest of them all. Like other actors who portrayed Wyatt Earp, Henry Fonda once again proves his worth and plays Wyatt as a normal man who is not too mean yet stern enough to make himself a man who shouldn't be reckoned with.
Others such as Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner made Wyatt Earp seem like a severely unlikeable guy and in the end I never really cared what happened to them. But Fonda found a way for me to truly care for Wyatt Earp in a sense that no one else could.
The gunfight at the O.K. corral was unforgettable and stands near the top as probably the more realistic of them all. My Darling Clementine is near the best of John Ford's westerns. Speaking in terms of higher quality scenery and just an all around beautiful film.
There were no flaws in My Darling Clementine which may give it the qualities to make it a landmark in the western genre.
