Review of My Cousin Vinny (1992) by Itamar K — 06 Aug 2010
Despite having been made in 1992, My Cousin Vinny has a distinct 80's feel in its first half - I'm not sure if it's the mere presence of Ralph Macchio, or the staggering amount of mistaken-identity gags (three of them in the first twenty minutes, none of which has any real point).
As long as Macchio and Whitfield are the center of the film, it's achingly bad comedy. Thankfully, the movie does get into its element once it turns into a courtroom farce, when Joe Pesci and especially Marisa Tomei take center stage and allow their characters to grow.
They're not great characters or very clever ones - how Tomei won that Oscar over Judy Davis and Vanessa Redgrave is a bit of a mystery - but they both do a commendable job with their roles, and make the second half of the movie watchable and even very entertaining, but still completely forgettable.
