Review of My Cousin Rachel (2017) by Margaret R — 14 Jun 2017
My Cousin Rachel was awesome. It's one of the best looking and possibly the best directed movie I've seen all year. Breathtaking cinematography and a beautifully haunting old-fashioned score that, while repetitive, knows how to keep you invested in the story at-hand.
Rachel Weisz is just too pro. She's incredible. She is phenomenal in this role, and she keeps you enthralled in the mystery of what her agenda is.
Sam Claflin plays a character that is unlikeable, but his performance here is so good and nuanced and charismatic that you definitely want to see what happens to his clueless character. The supporting cast here also is fantastic. After thinking that Iain Glen was the one very tiny bright spot in RE: Final Chapter, it was awesome to see him in a much better role with way better direction and a stronger, quieter performance.
The problems I have with this movie are small. The ending loses steam, the movie itself is mostly predictable and there's one character that is underwhelming.
This movie isn't as suspenseful as the trailer would lead you to believe. It plays out more as a darkly tinted, beautifully acted soap opera.
My Cousin Rachel gets an 8.7/10 and is Ownable.
