Review of My Blueberry Nights (2007) by Conner R — 17 Nov 2009
This is clearly the work of a skilled filmmaker, which makes it that much more painful to watch. A clutter of uninteresting vignettes occupied by shallow characters, this is a tedious viewing experience.
Norah Jones is not an actor, and she makes that fact very clear with her cringe-worthy debut performance. Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman, who are both capable of strong acting, are both underwhelming and periodically unconvincing in this film too.
Jude Law is typically charismatic and convincing, but he isn't in the story enough to keep the audience engaged, and he really doesn't have a lot to work with character-wise. This piece is superficially appealing enough that I want to explore Kar Wai Wong's more beloved movies.
However, on its own, it's surprisingly unpleasant.
