Review of My Blueberry Nights (2007) by Ana B — 22 Nov 2009
It is difficult to rate this movie. I really loved the scenery, the night bars and cafes, the neon lights, the portrait of the losers of small town America. There isn't a plot, this is an anthology of broken hearts, sad persons lost in their loneliness. And I loved the poetry of it.
However there is something not right about the structure, the pace it's uneven, the dialogues need some work because sometimes they are too forced, (the part about the pies is unbearable).
I believe Portman and Weisz were really outstanding in their roles. Jones should have done the right thing and limit herself to sing, after all that's the perfect movie for her songs, poetic and relaxing, (a little too relaxing in my opinion). And Jude Law... well, he seems to believe he is in a play more than a movie.
So that's why this film it is difficult to rate, it's irregular but with some definitely good features and performances.
