Review of My Bloody Valentine (1981) by Jon H — 30 Oct 2007
Caught this slasher flick at the renovated Circle Cinema in Tulsa, OK last week. I must say, I am a little biased. The theater itself was an experience itself and how 80's horror flicks should be viewed - by this I mean straight-up grindhouse style with all the dust and scratches on the film you can muster.
The old, dusty reel actually broke in the first 10 minutes of the movie and had to be re-spliced back together (b/c some old films get firm from weather conditions and when they get bent, they tend to break when they are ran through the projector spools).
Anyways, as far as the movie is concerned, the first 5 minutes are wonderful...the next hour is typical 80's unintentional comedy...the last 25 minutes is a great gorefest of goodies that is actually quite creepy considering the victims are in an abandoned coal mine being hunted by a gas-mask wearing, pick-ax wielding murderer.
Nonetheless, the ending comes out of nowhere and is actually somewhat confusing. Experience 5/5. Movie 3/5.
