Review of My Bloody Valentine (1981) by Marc S — 31 Aug 2008
One of the many "holiday themed slashers" spawned by Halloween is a cut above the rest in terms of production values but does not distinguish itself in any way. The acting is fairly good, much better than anything in the Friday the 13th series and at some points the viewer does care about the characters, which is the key to a good horror film.
The set-up is a classic "folk-tale" type story, which is just fine for this material. Unfortunately, the climax drags despite some initial, genuinely intense scenes and the ending seems a little too "tacked on" and abrupt.
Because of some editing to avoid an X rating, the final cut of this movie is less gorier than most slashers at the time.
