Review of My Bloody Valentine (1981) by Sean N — 15 Jan 2009
I can see why it's underrated but it was doing a lot of weird things that other slashers weren't doing in the 80's. Most notably the documentary feel in the opening coal mine scene and that ruck em' buck em' car race into town set to a wacky banjo tune.
I saw the recently released director's cut with all the added gore put back in, it definitely helps as I think this movie works better without your imagination filling in all the blanks. But what I like most about this flick is how it took the completely cheesy concept of setting a slasher around Valentine's Day and working it with a small town and small cast.
The setting's and ideas were just right, but hardly anyone cared except for the ones who got it. Basically this movie is kind of like if Harlan County USA was a slasher.
