There is a huge difference between laughing at a group of people and laughing with a group of people. What made the first My Big Fat Greek Wedding so great was that it was a movie that laughed with Greek Americans, so much of that movie rang true to family and felt like home.
This sequel laughs at Greek American families, over playing stereotypes not for the sake of Greek Americans but for the sake of the Anglo-American neighbors of Greek families who find their antics and volume to be foreign and laughable. Thus jokes felt overplayed and stale.
