Review of My American Uncle (1980) by Ryan M — 11 Aug 2010
Expert on human behaviour Henri Laborit tests out his theories on the way human beings work, using the 3 main characters in this film; Rene; Janine and Jean. We watch their lives unfold, are given background information on their childhood while Laborit explains his theories which the viewer uses to deconstruct each character's actions during certain episodes of their lives.
More of a psychology experiment than a linear film, "My American Uncle" is endlessly fascinating. By adding a human behaviour expert to comment on the film, "My American Uncle" becomes more of a comedy than a drama, as the 3 main characters are likened to lab rats being studied by Laborit and by us.
Quirky and brilliant, another Resnais masterpiece.
