Review of My All American (2015) by Sonia E P — 10 Nov 2015
Phenomenal. Amazing. Astounding. Exceptional. Outstanding. Remarkable. Sensational - all of these adjectives fittingly describe this tearjerking movie.
Freddie Steinmark (Finn Wittrock) is a smaller than average football player from Colorado who defies all those that say he is too small to play. Through nothing other than hard work and unparalleled talent, his fight and passion soon gets noticed by legendary University of Texas Football Coach Darrell Royal (Aaron Eckhart) who in 1967 recruits him to play for the Texas Longhorns.
My all American portrays the heartbreak true story of Freddie Steinmark who led the Longhorns to their second ever championship win after beating the Arkansas Razorbacks in a game which was later dubbed the "game of the century". However, just as they are reveling in their success Freddie suffers an injury which leads him to be diagnosed with bone cancer. His leg is amputated which brings an end to his career, and two years later at age 22, an end to his life.
I am not a fan of football, but this isn't so much a movie about football as it is about striving for success despite adversity and disbelief at one's ability and passion to reach your dreams. It is a heartbreaking and wonderful story that will leave you in tears hours after it has finished.
