Review of My All American (2015) by Norm D — 05 Oct 2016
My movie tastes are pretty sophisticated and run a gamut. So how the crits could splat this true story, well told, with good actors and go Fresh on the awful, sophomoric "The Lobster," also with usually good actors, is weird.
This is a football movie; they have things in common with all the others. Melodrama? No, unless all heartrending stories are thus. Descent into cliche? No, not when it's faithful to the subject and that subject is the old-school version of clean-cut U.
S. male. The crits are mixed-up. But then they've likely never experienced mind focusing 2-a-days, Summer training, wind-sprints, or the bull-in-the-ring of that crew-cut era. The music IS dialed-up to max movie tone.
Maybe that's twanging their corroded & de-tuned heart strings. But it's beautiful, too, esp'ly in 5.1 surround. Eckhart gets it done, as always. (See "Thank-you For Smoking.").
A man's movie that's also a a bit of a chick-flick. Definitely worth a look; borrowed from our public library.
