Review of Mutiny (1999) by Robin W — 31 Oct 2009
If you want to make an outer space science-fiction adventure and you don't make have the budget for any special effects, "Space Mutiny" has a solution: recycle a bunch of footage from "Battlestar Galactica", shoot some very cheap interior scenes (inside a spaceship that looks more like a brewery) and combine them together into one crappy movie! This hilarious piece of cheese has an incomprehensible plot that's impossible to follow, and tons of silly costumes, laughable dialogue, and bad acting (especially when villain John Philip Law makes pathetic attempts to do an evil laugh), but it's the ridiculous action scenes that provide the most priceless moments; highlights include chase sequences with golf carts that move at speeds of about three miles per hour, and lots and LOTS of scenes of people being shot and falling over safety railings.
The film also contains some of the worst continuity in cinema history, with one character getting killed and then clearly popping up in the foreground of the next scene! While the movie is the source of one of the all-time funniest Mystery Science Theater episodes, it's goofy enough to be worth watching on its own.
