Review of Mute Witness (1995) by Riemill M — 13 Aug 2007
A gem, if only because this film was a rare Russian-American venture, as well as being a Russian Thriller, which is very rare. Additionally, I always find films where they have two equally emphasized central languages to be fun, because neither Russian speakers, nor English speakers, as in this case, are left out.
Nice premise about a woman who witnesses a murder, but cannot verbally tell people what she saw, or scream. This film offers up some amusing over-the-top slasher film parodying, shady, and slimy Russians, and one very ruthless, and intimidating British ringleader played by Alec Guinness.
Although this film has some stretches which are a bit tedious, the overall effect was still very fun, and a refreshing film because it was largely shot on location in Moscow, Russia.
As Russians are known to say, "The Russian soul is a very complex one"; and part of that soul is infused into this film.
