Review of Mute (2018) by Jonathan G — 23 Feb 2018
Enough with the Blade Runner cityscapes already. Blade Runner 2049 and Altered Carbon and now this. The future, it would seem is populated by people under 40 who go to strip clubs when, in reality it will be stuffed with old people going endlessly to supermarkets.
There seems to be an overwrought complexity in the characterisation. A man who is mute and speaking characters who alternate between English and German talking endlessly about.....er....tedium. It's way too dull.
It's a crime caper, basically but it needs a swift boot up it's arse to get all the protagonists into focus and move on with the search for the missing girl. In a world where everyone is seemingly a dick, no one is a dick so everyone is a plausible villain with a motive.
It's like picking a denouement out of a hat. And the villain is....everyone! The clumsy sub plot dealing with Theroux's seedy quasi-paedophile is badly handled too. Not least because he looks like an adult Harry Potter.
That, my friends is the most dastardly thing of all. Massive yawn.
