Review of Mutant Chronicles (2008) by Janet D — 08 Aug 2009
The sci-fi/steam punk premise, coupled with a relatively decent list of cast members, seemed to me somewhat promising after viewing the trailer. Upon watching the actual film in its entirety, however, I regret to say that it was a disappointing waste of time.
Story: underdeveloped - and the progression of the screenplay is incredibly choppy and inconsistent.
Effects: a seeming hybrid of 300, Sin City, and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - more often than not marred by poor cinematography and/or editing choices (or simply underwhelming due to the sparse color palette).
Acting: surprisingly sub-par, considering the actors involved...one gets the impression that they "mailed it" in on purpose (but if it was deliberately meant to be campy, "Sky Captain..." pulled this off much more artistically).
Towards the end of the film, you're most likely rolling your eyes and groaning at the contrivances. When it's finally over, you'll wonder who thought that this should've been made in the first place.
