Review of Mustang (2015) by Kyle B — 11 Feb 2016
One of the Oscar nominees for Best Foreign Film and deservingly so in a group of nominees that just by trailers alone are a lot of dark subjects and this being a glimmer of light in the line up. The five actresses playing the sisters all do a great job and some even were so good that when they needed to exit the movie for long periods of time the movie's stamina would dip up and down.
It's an interesting look at the modern day idea of what it is to be a feminist and how to deal with ancient religious practices that just don't make any sense in modern day any more like arranged marriages and blocking off young girls from anything that could cause anything mindset of sexuality.
The screenplay is great filled with poignant moments and humorous ones. I really enjoyed the first hour of this movie and one significant departure of one of the girls was where the movie started to dip in stamina but it all picks up with a really great climax.
I did enter this movie a few minutes late due to a timing mix up and someone behind me was discussing the movie since she saw it before this time with her friend and made sense out of the ending that I really didn't understand the significance for but now I will have to check it out on DVD to fully grasp what it all meant.
I've only seen 2 of the 5 nominees so far for Foreign language film and I would still give it to Son of Saul but this makes for a very enjoyable nominee that would be a worthy winner if it somehow pulled off an upset.
