Review of Mustang (2015) by Tor M — 01 May 2016
Nominated for best foreign movie at the Oscars. Five orphan girls lives at their guardians and tries their best to act just as young girls often do. They are interested in boys and does everthing they can to get in touch with them, even if there is a huge risk of getting into trouble by their grandmother and Erol - the two people that takes care of them.
They belong to a culture where arranged marriages are normal, so most of the film is got a big pinch of this theme. Erol makes their house into something that looks more like a prison and the girls are both angry and desperate - trying to get out of the house. They want to know the guys they are going to marry someday, not getting picked by possible candidates chosen by their caregivers.
Smooth music, nice camerawork and an all right story. It's not something very new, since I feel I have watched many films over the years that takes up this, or similiar themes. A solid film, but it would have been much bigger if it was made five or ten years ago.
6.5 out of 10 window escapings.
