Review of Music and Lyrics (2007) by Michael F — 04 Jun 2010
This film is a cleverly conceived love story enhanced by an incredibly convincing cast and entertaining musical score -- including songs by Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne).
The idiosyncrasies and complexities of Barrymore's character, Sophie Fisher, were intriguing, fun and captivating, and delivered unassumingly with an authentic naivete I found very appealing.
With his character, Alex Fletcher, Grant weaves his usual comedic wit and romantic repartee throughout the film. Braving a career crossroads, he decides to revitalize a seemingly moribund : ) singing career and limited present "POP"ularity, and refashion himself into something much more marketable while at the same time convincing Barrymore(Fisher) to further explore her fledgling potential as a lyricist.
The result is a collaboration turned romance, and a humble, likable, versatile artist with a fresh, contemporary presence to a new generation of fans.
Both Barrymore(Fisher)and Grant(Fletcher) are extremely believable in their roles -- including some great surprises with Grant's vocal performances and musical abilities.
Another nice surprise is Haley Bennett(Cora) -- from both a vocal skill and star quality perspective.
I consider this movie a top tier romantic comedy, and a personal favorite of mine for any genre.
I highly recommend the movie and soundtrack...enjoy!!!
