Review of Murder-Set-Pieces (2004) by Steven M — 12 Jun 2007
This film got an official release in America with 7 or 8 minutes cut from it... That version, I'm assuming, is shit...
The uncut NC-17 version, while not the goriest film I've seen (when put up against the August Underground films it's quite tame) is still a genuinely good film... For the stupid cunts who say this film has no plot, the point of the film is to solely look at the situation from the killer's point of view, with no shitty side plot of a cop trying to catch him, or some bullshit moral story... This is a serial killer film with no moral tale to tell, other than showing you proceedings from the serial killers point of view... Which in turn highlights the horrific aspects of such acts... Serial killers often have very little motive behind what they do, unlike what were shown in films like 7even... Makes no sense? No plot? You mean it has no shitty side plot to needlessly pad out the film? Fuck off and watch it again...
Also, the movie does not simply have an online rep because he hired a street team, it's got a reputation through word of mouth... I know, because I witnessed the film coming through its production stages and went on forums where this film was discussed... Admittedly he probably had some kind of street team to promote the film, but so what? That's how independent producers, without the millions that the studios have to promote big budget bollocks that gets into the cinema, promote their films... Along with word of mouth...
The acting, I admit, won't win the film any awards any time soon, I mean the majority of the actresses were genuine hookers... I didn't feel it hampered it in any way though...
My only other criticism is that maybe it wasn't quite gory enough... I mean the film was supposed to be morally devoid tale of a serial killers exploits... But I felt it kind of held back, be it for budget constraints or another reason...
Overall, this is a highly enjoyable film, who's gore is far beyond what is shown in the cinemas (hence the cuts which had to made to get in an R rating)... And while the acting may not be the greatest in the world, I've seen far worse in the abundance of teen horror films which cost more and get bigger releases...
DON'T buy the cut version, pay extra for the uncut version!
