Review of Murder on the Orient Express (2017) by Katherine P — 26 Nov 2017
Very well done. I am passionate about the Albert Finney version of this story, and have likewise seen the David Suchet version, which is a much different, darker take, I believe, than Christie originally intended.
As much as Branagh is clearly over the top in his typical acting style, he is a good Hercule Poirot. Furthermore, I submit that this version does a superior job of cinemetography, both of the elegance of the train's interior and the majesty of the mountainous exterior, than the previous attempts.
Poirot's mustache was masterful. The cast was well assembled, and Michelle Pfeiffer was a superb Mrs. Hubbard. I think even Lauren Bacall would agree. In all, an elegant retelling of the tale, and while this version (like the Finney Version) strayed from the book by having Poirot let the guilty off the hook, this version tipped the hat to Poirot's true nature, as Christie created him, of Poirot seeking with fervency justice for the crime.
