Review of Murder on the Orient Express (2017) by Jon C — 12 Nov 2017
A worthy remake although it may not reach the shock value and intelligence of its predecessor.
Still has an ensemble cast from Johnny Depp to Penelope Cruz to Judi Dench to Josh Gad to Willem Dafoe to Michelle Pfeiffer.
The opening is also quite different here.
Kenneth Branagh wonderfully acts in front of the camera and behind the camera handling such detail in every frame.
Plus the angles and the up-close depth of field shots give the viewer that intense feeling of interrogation for each passenger.
Pirrot never solves a mystery for the thrill of it; there's right and wrong and nothing in between.
We even get more insight into his character of someone very close to him.
This one feels shorter than the 1970's version but Branagh is allowed to show enough of his craft evening bringing modern things into the 1935 setting.
There's also a bit more action in this one, too.
We can totally see humanity is capable of savagery and deep loss.
It's usually never one person whom has suffered.
A bit faster, still really well-acted, and Branagh proves to be the best detective in the world picking up on things that make people stand out.
