Review of Murder on the Orient Express (2017) by Vanessa A — 22 Dec 2017
A visual feast. Branagh's Poirot is a treat for any true Agatha Christie fan and a welcome sight over the buffoonish portrayal in the original 1974 version, which found Albert Finney bumbling around more like Clouseau than Christie's eccentric but deft Poirot.
Johnny Depp, finally free of Tim Burton's shackles flexes his perfectly seedy side as Ratchett. The only weak player in this stellar cast was Michelle Pfeiffer whose performance, though adequate, had none of the grit or wit of her 70s counterpart.
No matter though, the rest of the bunch are perfectly cast and the ambiance, visuals, pacing, and storytelling are all beautifully handled by the skillful Branagh. A must see for any Christie fan or anyone interested in a TRUE cinematic experience.
