Review of Murder on the Orient Express (1974) by Martin O — 05 Jun 2006
Very good Agatha Christie adaptation by Sidney Lumet. It is far from perfection, it is schematic and it has it`s flaws, including some too long scenes. Still, the mood of the film is old-fashioned and enjoyable and the acting ensemble is great.
Albert Finney was not exactly perfect Poirot, he acted solidly, but never came close to David Suchet`s ultimate Poirot-role on TV. The film also has some nice settings and camerawork. The supporting cast is perfect, including Sean Connery, Anthony Perkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Michael York, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Ingrid Bergman, Lauren Bacall and others.
I can`t understand why it was Bergman who won the Oscar, even Bacall had way stronger performance, so she even wasn`t the best supporting actress of this film. If you want to watch it for only because Bergman won Oscar here, I don`t recommend it, but if you are into good old-fashioned detective story with twist ending, then I do.
