Review of Murder by Decree (1979) by Darren J — 27 Jan 2008
Sherlock Holmes investigates the Jack the Ripper killings is the premise for this blend of fictional mystery thriller meets real life unsolved murder. The writers keep to the events and create a very disturbing movie into which Holmes fits perfectly.
As a child I remember watching this and knowing about the Ripper but not realizing that Sherlock Holmes was a fictional creation thought this was a true tale. It presents a plausible conclusion based on one of the more popular theories and the cast are excellent.
Christopher Plummer makes a wonderful Holmes and James Mason gives a multi layered performance as the usually two dimensional Watson. The supporting cast is exceptional and this is much more satisfying than the Depp movie 'From Hell'.
