Review of Muppets Most Wanted (2014) by Lee W — 28 Dec 2014
Muppets Most Wanted isn't as good as the previous entry in the series. The gag hit-rate isn't quite as high. The tunes aren't quite as memorable. The supporting human cast isn't quite as adorable (Jason Segal, Amy Adams) or dastardly (Chris Cooper and his MANIACAL LAUGH). But this knowing, nodding and winking sequel still has enough Muppety charm going for it, and there's bags of fun to be had playing spot-the-cameo. The likes of Ray Liotta, Danny Trejo and, oddly, WWE's Hornswoggle get plenty of screentime, and there's even a Flight of the Conchords reunion of sorts. But...was that James McAvoy? Sure was. Did TV's Detectorists, Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones, just turn up for a one line appearance? Yup. Stanley Tucci, Chloe Moretz and Rob Corddry? Check, check and check.
And, hey, when a sequel points out in its opening number that it won't be as good as the last one, it's hard not to fall in love with it a little bit. So not quite five Jamons Serrano (hell, even Citizen Kane only got four), but still an entertaining watch.
