Review of Muppets Most Wanted (2014) by Delphinus C — 23 Jul 2014
Surprisingly disappointing. All the musical numbers fell flat and came out of nowhere, the cameos were overdone, the relationships felt flat, and the jokes were broad and sparse. It all felt phony. Also surprisingly xenophobic for a film that wants an international audience, with the sections with the Interpol detective not so much a ridiculous American stereotype (Sam the Eagle) vs.
a ridiculous French one, as a rational American (again SAM THE FRIGGIN' EAGLE as the voice of reason) vs. a lazy and overpampered dumb Frenchman who goes on four weeks' holiday in the middle of a case.
A surprisingly cruel and mean-spirited caricature coming from a Muppet movie. And Tina Fey as the Russian prison guard wasn't so hot either. Constantine was fun though, even if the joke that he's not nice to his number two is neither interesting or funny.
