Review of Muppets from Space (1999) by Joe W — 22 Sep 2012
SPOILER ALERT: It's okay but it feels, I dunno, you ever feel like that there's something missing? It's not as strong as the other Muppet movies. It could've been a lot better. With a title like "Muppets From Space", you'd think it would be an outer space adventure, that would've been a lot better. Kids will find the whole government plot dull.
It's nice to know what species Gonzo is and to have him be the lead, instead of his supporting roles. But it would've been really nice if Gonzo did go with his family at the end and come back to the Muppets a month later. But no, he just chooses to be with his friends.
The jokes are average. Some are good, others are just not funny. The celebrity cameos are pointless, there are some pretty bad special effects (the worst effect being the goop used for the door in a jar when someone throws it to the floor, the CGI goop is REALLY bad!) in this and it just doesn't feel strong. Jeffrey Tambor is stuck playing "The Jerk", like he always does. Poor man.
The "Celebrations" song is good and there are some other good 70's songs as well.
A failure on release due to adult aimed movies crushing it. Kids might enjoy. Overall, it's just okay.
PS. Frank Oz has nothing nice to say about this film.
Also, could the "Door in a jar" be a nod to Super Mario Bros 2?
