Review of Munich (2005) by Sarfaraz A — 14 Mar 2011
For some reason I thought Munich was solely about the tragedy at the 1972 Olympics, also know as the Munich Massacre. Instead its about the Mossad's supposed Operations Wrath of God and Spring of Youth to exact revenge on the Palestinians involved in planning the deaths of the 11 Israeli athletes.
Of course the movie doesn't follow history to the letter. Instead it tells the story from the point of view of a low-level Mossad techie whose father was a war hero. With Avner's character it gives the movie a more human element, sort of.
In the end, after all the 'vengeance has been exacted', he learns that killing just begets killing. Now if only the Palestinians and Israelis could learn that in real life. Coincidentally, or maybe not so coincidentally, Munich was released a year after a lengthy court fight, in which the families of the Munich victims reached a financial settlement with the German government for covering up the truth.
(Nominated for best picture in 2005).
