Review of Munich (2005) by Barbara R — 20 Aug 2011
Wow. Very good. Exceeded my expectations. At first I just expected an ok vanilla action film with a political background, much like Matt Damon's Green Zone. Also for the first half of the movie, I couldn't take Eric Bana seriously as the assassin team leader after seeing him in Funny People.
However, as the story progressed the film became progressively better as it became darker. As the team killed off more of their targets they were subsequently picked off, making the film the embodiment of the saying "he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.
" Bana's acting also seemed to improve as the movie went on, as his character went from an optimistic lad just doing his job in the field to an angry, melancholy and paranoid agent on the run.
The ending scene was hurt by conflating the climax of the violence at Munich with Bana's character having sex with his wife. Yet overall I think Spielberg pulled it off. The film wasn't Syriana or The Hurt Locker but it came close in its own way.
It was definitely better than the Bourne films. Plus we got early glimpses of Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) and Geoffrey Rush (The King's Speech). Definitely a good watch.
