Review of Munich (2005) by Tiberio S — 25 Jul 2015
Steven Spielberg takes a different turn from propagandist to objective artist, jerking our feelings in multiple directions as opposed to the kind of one sidedness we see in films like Lincoln. This is by far his most challenging film, and the result creates a genuine feeling of horror for the conflict at hand without glorifying any heroes, a rare result in any Spielberg outing.
As far as political thrillers, I wish every one Spielberg made was more like this - he does it incredibly well. Not since The Color Purple have we got such a gritty look at these kinds of societal conflicts.
Schindler's List, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, and Lincoln are all too full of glorification in conflicts which are more complex than anyone is willing to admit. It's also amongst the best of Janusz Kaminski's photography, who creates an atmosphere that we can live in, rather than just look at, for a near three hour picture.
