Review of Mumbai Meri Jaan (2008) by Bryon V — 22 Jul 2010
Very good Bollywood drama about the Mumbai Train Bombings. The most standout performance, for me, was K.K. Menon as a Hindu man obsessed with blaming all Muslims for these attacks. (He even goes so far as to start wearing a t-shirt with a Nazi flag on it!) Of course, in the end he realizes the error of his ways, as do many other characters in the film.
It's a little heavy-handed at times, kinda like a Bollywood version of "Crash" (Not the Cronenberg film, you dolt!), but since that's a pretty standard characteristic of ALL Bollywood films, it should be taken in stride. In fact, I'd say this is one of the most serious Bollywood films I've seen yet. (And no, there are no dance numbers!).
The special effects for the train explosions were really poorly done though. I know it's Bollywood, and they were trying to make it violent and gross to make you feel more revulsion and terror at the scene...but it's really bad CGI. I mean, like...."SyFy Channel Original Movie" bad CGI. It would've worked better to show show 1970s-style explosions, and then show a gory aftermath instead.
