Review of Mulholland Drive (2001) by Geoffrey T — 11 Apr 2012
I admit, I shouldnâ(TM)t be a fan of David Lynch films, because of the fact he often makes them up as he goes along, making very vague connections in an otherwise overtly artistic style. However, I canâ(TM)t help but enjoy this film, despite these thoughts.
David Lynch is a solid director, in terms of shots and angels, the film is very well made, with some wonderful shots throughout the film. The build up of a scene in the diner where a man discusses his nightmare has some amazing build up in direction.
I am also wonderfully impressed by Naomi Wattsâ(TM) performance throughout the movie. In one half playing Betty, a star-shining actress full of hope and obvious delight, and in the other Diane, a weary, worn-down broken woman, she plays both perfectly, switching ably between the two with ease, which is very impressive. Her use of sexual tension in her audition was shocking and amazing, a magnificently played scene.
Despite the good performances and the good direction, the lack of coherent script leaves me not enjoying it completely. I still think itâ(TM)s a good film, I just have unfortunate issues with it.
