Review of Mulholland Drive (2001) by Solidity Q — 04 Jan 2015
Resisting all forms of synopsis and analysis in characteristically Lynchian fashion, Mulholland Dr. is cultish, it's cool, and I love every single second of it. Using a morally murky LA as his muse, Lynch paints a surreal, non-linear, WTF-filled foray into a tangled world of loser hit men, gangsters with questionable motivations, closeted lesbians and an in-over-his-head director.
Feel lost yet? You don't know the half of it. Viewed by many as a satire on the shallowness and corruption of Hollywood, and there may be truth to that, but then again, it's Lynch, so the definitions never stick.
The key to enjoying it is to not try to figure it out. Because you can't. The movie itself even takes about 20 to expain the twist. Just watch, enjoy the mind-bending surrealism and the fact things don't make sense.
Naomi Watts and Laura Harring get it on, too.
