Review of Mulholland Dr. (1999) by Maxwell S — 31 Oct 2012
Unlike films like "Lost Highway" or "Inland Empire", "Mulholland Drive" was Lynch truly in love with what he was doing, which makes this immensely atmospherical and illogical film even greater than just the idea of it.
I am aware that there is "a key to unlocking Mulholland Drive", but I theres part of me that doesn't want me to ever figure it out. It isn't just the fact that this film is "disjointed", it's HOW it's disjointed that ranks it among not only the greatest films of the 2000's, but of all time.
It isn't just HOW the pieces are placed, it's WHAT the pieces contain! Some of these scenes are just so fulfilling to the atmosphere. "Mulholland Drive" creates a whole spectrum of how to structure a film as much as "Wavelength" (1967) did.
I can't quite but it into words, but this is probably the biggest game changer since "L'Atalante" (my favorite film) was restored in the 50's.
