Review of Mulan (1998) by Amice L — 27 Dec 2010
Such a disapointment for me, especially after the all the critical acclaim that came with it. Eddie Murphy makes it watchable, but for a story that necessitates the most epic of scales, Disney ultimately put out a painful minimalist product.
While that may have been due to the limitations of traditional animation, or sacrificed in order to maintain focus on the protaganist's personal development is unclear. Seeing the climactic battle for China come down to 6 heroes versus an approximately equal number of stylized Mongols was more silly than minimalist, particularly when the film had made plenty of references to large armies operating just off screen.
