Review of Mudbound (2017) by Matthew H — 18 Nov 2017
It is difficult to honestly rate this film, primarily because of its absolutely DEPRESSING narrative, even more than say Schindler's List, 12 Years as a Slave or Mississippi Burning. The acting is superb, the visual/cinematography stunning, but it is painfully difficult and depressing to watch.
Of course it is important, of course it is timely, but one walks out of the experience totally bummed!!! I did not find much in the way of salvation, redemption, or hope. I feel the people who need to see a film like this will not, and the people who do see it are well aware of America's shameful past and ongoing shameful current state of racism.
Yes, it is a provocative film but be warned....it is violent, depressing, and exhausting.
