Review of Mudbound (2017) by Wayne K — 28 Feb 2018
A movie that only really comes to life in it's second half, Mudbound follows 2 men from different races and backgrounds returning from war to confront their own problems in their own ways. Despite the praise Mary J.
Blige received, I feel the better, more affecting performances were given by Jason Mitchell & Garrett Hedlund. Both are raw, honest and believable, and make all the others pale in comparison. Too much of the narrative feels conventional and, at best, serviceable, and the constant narration emanating from not 1 but 6 characters becomes annoying very quickly.
As with many movies that contain voiceover, it's employed as a cheap way to explain a character's background and motivation without having to actually show us. It gets most interesting when it reaches its climax, but most of the build up is stale, boring and uninvolving.
