Matthew McConaughey is Mud, a truly bad guy, hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud spins a lot of yarns to Ellis and Nackbone to make himself seem better. He wants his girlfriend to escape with him.
But she has moved on. So he vents his rage and a line of bounty hunters show up.
