Review of Mud (2013) by Dov D — 19 Dec 2013
This is without question one of the best films of 2013. The story transcends the rural fishing town it's set in and touches on all aspects of life. It's a bit slow at times, but the incredibly well done score helps to lull the audience into to film, creating a personal connection between the two.
The direction Jeff Nichols provides makes me want to see his other films without knowing a thing about them and the acting... Oh the acting... Some of the finest performances I have ever seen. Finally, a movie that showcases the talents of Matthew McConaughey, who to often takes roles that are so far beneath him.
Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland have incredibly bright futures ahead of them if they can maintain this level of skill. The end was just a tad cheesy for the overall tone of the film, but other than that, I have absolutely no complaints.
Bottom line, this is a beautiful piece of cinema and deserves far more recognition than it's getting. I'm sure once the Academy Awards roll around, we'll be hearing the name Mud early and often.
I'd recommend this film to everyone.
