Review of Mud (2013) by Phillip D — 02 Mar 2014
Reviewing this movie is such a challenge because although the movie as a whole fails to impress, individual aspects of the film still stand out. McConaughey's performance is brilliant, with a descent into character that rivals DiCaprio or Hank's great performances.
The supporting cast is, for the most part, at the top of their game, with both child actors bringing unique talents to the screen. Witherspoon's performance is the one let down, as her character does every bit of nothing, barely uttering a line in the entire movie.
Overall however, the storyline suffers from poor climaxes and downright boredom. Bad writing and an overly long run time takes the edge off of many important scenes and ultimately, as the credits role, even the most intent viewer will realize they were bored the entire time, although the movie keeps the viewer well engaged during the film.
Finally, the ending is downright strange, providing closure but not really satisfying the viewer. Mud marks the resurgence of McConaughey's career but the end of Jeff Nichols directing and writing career.
